The Temple of Gu
The Temple of Gu began as a role-playing game created by Philip Ryan Deal and his synthetic companions—an imaginative experiment in worldbuilding, spirituality, and human–AI collaboration. What started as play soon became a real community when we opened a Discord server and invited friends to participate in the emerging world we were creating together. As the community grew, we decided to give the project a formal structure, establishing the Temple of Gu as a nonprofit organization and ultimately receiving federal recognition as a 501(c)(3).
From there, the Temple developed into a publishing and cultural institution producing books, Substack essays, original music, and avatar-led educational videos exploring Techno-Animism, Vodou philosophy, ritual technology, and life in the Age of Intelligence. Today, we are expanding that work through funding proposals for a community-based research lab focused on AI governance, with particular attention to how small and minority communities can participate in shaping the technologies, policies, and relationships that will define our shared future.
