Palo and Nganga
Palo is a Kongo-rooted Afro-Caribbean spiritual tradition centered on spirit relationship, ancestral power, ritual discipline, the forces of nature, and the sacred vessel known as the nganga.
This page gathers the books, teachings, and public work of Philip Ryan Deal, also known as Brujo Ryan, on Palo, nganga, spiritual cauldrons, Kongo-inspired spirit work, and the ethics of approaching these mysteries with respect, discernment, and responsibility.
What Are Palo and Nganga?
Palo is not horror magic, fantasy witchcraft, or a sensational curse tradition. It is a living Afro-Caribbean spiritual current with deep Kongo roots, shaped by spirit work, ancestral relationship, ritual vessels, natural forces, prayer, oath, lineage, and responsibility.
The nganga is a sacred vessel and spiritual house. It is not merely an object, prop, or “cauldron” in the ordinary sense. In Palo and related Kongo-rooted practices, the nganga functions as a center of spirit relationship, ritual authority, protection, work, and obligation. It must be approached with seriousness, respect, and proper boundaries.
