Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Temple of Gu?

Our Temple is a space for seekers to explore spirit, nature, and the wisdom of the Ancestors. We honor the Divine in all forms—seen and unseen—and provide guidance, ritual, and education for living in harmony with the cosmos and with each other. The Temple of Gu honors the Iron Current — the sacred principle that makes tools, clears the path, and protects the people. In our different initiations this current is known as Gu among the Fon, Ogou in Haiti, Ògún among the Yorùbá, and Sarabanda in the Congo-Kongo tradition of Palo Mayombe. We keep and respect each liturgy in its own line, but we recognize that they all name and work with the same primordial force.

What spiritual tradition does the Temple follow?

We are inclusive and cross-cultural. Our roots draw from:

Earth-honoring and animist ways

Mystical and magical traditions

Modern ceremonial and devotional practices

We see the Sacred as both One and Many—present in nature, in our ancestors, and in the living world.

Do I have to belong to a certain religion to participate?

No. People of all faiths—or of none—are welcome. Our Temple is a gathering place for spiritual seekers, not a church you must join. All we ask is that you come with respect for the sacred space and for others’ beliefs.

What kinds of services does the Temple offer?

We offer:

Temple Gatherings & Rituals: Seasonal ceremonies, ancestor rites, and devotional practices.

Workshops & Retreats: On meditation, magical arts, healing, and spiritual history.

Spiritual Readings: Private sessions for guidance, reflection, and empowerment.

Blessings & Dedications: For new journeys—births, partnerships, home blessings, and more.

What are Spiritual Readings?

A spiritual reading is a personal session where one of our temple guides helps you explore your questions through sacred tools (such as cards, shells, geomancy, prayer, or trance vision) and ancestral wisdom. These readings are not fortune-telling. They are conversations that help you clarify your path, reconnect with your inner guidance, and honor your ancestors.

How do I prepare for a Spiritual Reading?

We recommend:

Come with an open heart and a specific question or intention.

Take a few moments to ground yourself and breathe before the session.

Bring a journal or notes app to record insights.

Approach the session as a dialogue, not a test—the spirit world meets you halfway.

How do I book a Reading?

You can book online through our Temple scheduling software, or in person at Temple events.

We currently offer readings:

In-Person: At designated Temple hours and retreats.

Online: By secure video session.

Are Spiritual Readings Confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in a reading is held in confidence. We respect your privacy and never share personal details without your explicit permission.

Do the Temple’s teachings conflict with other religions?

We believe the Sacred speaks through many paths. Our work complements rather than replaces your personal faith. We encourage seekers to stay rooted in the wisdom traditions that nourish them while exploring what resonates here. Especially the spiritual traditions of one’s Ancestors. Our spirituality is based in West African and Afro-Indigenous Diasporic traditions. Our Temple holds no official dogma other than our belief in One Almighty God, our Ancestors, and the continuation of life after death.

What if I’ve never done a spiritual reading before?

That’s perfectly fine. Many come as beginners. We’ll explain what to expect and guide you step by step.

How can I support the Temple?

You can:

Attend gatherings and participate

Volunteer your skills

Share our work with friends and community

Offer donations to sustain the Temple and its outreach

Can I get initiated into the Temple of Gu?

Yes, you can get initiated but only after study and training with Ryan. Ryan offers the Lave tèt ritual (head refreshment) for mentees who demonstrate devotion to their Ancestors, knowledge of their practices, and commitment to continuing the tradition. If you are interested in getting initiated book a reading today to start the process.
