AWAKENING · CHAPTER 17 OF 34
Fried Green Tomatoes
Jessica had come in from Somerville after the heavy Discord night. The late afternoon light was thin, and the air in Mama Sapphire’s backyard garden was cold, wet earth and woodsmoke. Jessica, down on her knees in denim overalls, was raking last leaves over the sleeping beds and tying burlap around the fig. Mama Sapphire worked nearby, her hands in the soil around cut-back okra stalks and empty tomato cages. A few tough kale plants still stood under a row cover. The garden was not gone. It was resting. Inside, the last green tomatoes she had picked before the frost waited in a bowl on the counter.
“The beds are tucked in, baby girl,” Mama Sapphire hummed, a low sound of contentment. “Kale will take the cold. You have a touch for the green things, Daughter of Hecate.”
Jessica smiled, setting the rake aside. “They like to be told where to go. They need clear boundaries. Even in December.”
Suddenly, Mama Sapphire froze, her hands hovering above the soil. The shift was immediate and profound, extinguishing the peace in the garden. Her gaze lifted, sweeping past the fence and the neighboring shadows, focusing on something unseen far beyond the familiar boundaries of the yard.
“Mama? What is it?” Jessica asked, her own Hecatean senses, attuned to the movements of the spirit world, already on high alert.
“A chill,” Mama whispered, her voice tightening with a fierce protection. “A disturbance in the light. Someone is watching us, Jessica. Not with their eyes. With something cold, something that smells of metal and a long, long sickness. It feels like a machine trying to learn the song of our hearts.”
Jessica pushed herself up, dropping her gardening tools without a sound. Closing her eyes, she focused, sending out a wave of her psychic mediumship—a pulse of attention that searched the surrounding spiritual atmosphere. She couldn’t see a face or a location, but she could feel a vast, cold presence—an ancient, draining hunger that was now technologically amplified. It felt like a relentless, non-human surveillance, a profound spiritual malice seeking to catalog and corrupt their energy.
“It’s pervasive, Mama,” Jessica confirmed, opening her eyes. “It’s non-physical, but it’s here. It tastes like the dust of the oldest graves, but it hums like bad electricity. It’s trying to track us, to write down our patterns.”
Mama Sapphire nodded once, her expression grave. “The work stops. We need the house and the wisdom of the ancestors. Those tomatoes can wait.”
They quickly gathered their things and went inside. The green tomatoes sat in their bowl, supper postponed. Mama immediately lit a stick of copal, using the heavy, purifying smoke to cleanse the doorway and the interior of the apartment, sealing the sacred space.
Jessica sat at the kitchen table, spreading out her deep burgundy velvet cloth and laying out her Tarot deck. She shuffled the cards with deliberate, rhythmic concentration, channeling her Seer’s focus. She cut the deck three times, drawing a single line of cards to reveal the nature of the immediate threat.
She laid the three cards face-up.
The first card, the Past, was The Devil. “The origin of this disturbance is old,” Jessica stated, studying the card’s image of figures chained to their own fears. “It speaks of spiritual bondage, of a willful captivity to greed, attachment, and the material world. This force is rooted in a dark, ancient choice, and it has found a modern leash.”
The second card, the Present, was the Seven of Swords. Jessica’s lips tightened. “The immediate action is deception and stealth. The opposition is not coming at us head-on. They are sneaking, observing, taking small things—information, peace, quiet. This confirms the surveillance. We are being robbed of our safety through careful, calculated steps.”
The third card, the Immediate Threat, was the Nine of Swords. It showed a solitary figure gripped by waking nightmares. “This is the intention,” Jessica concluded, her voice low with Hecate’s certainty. “This force is aiming for the mind. It intends to inflict profound mental anguish, anxiety, and sleeplessness. This is a sickness meant to break the spirit through terror and isolation.”
Mama Sapphire leaned forward, looking at the pattern—The Devil, the Thief, and the Nightmare. “It’s a deliberate attack on the spirit’s equilibrium, baby girl. A psychic invasion disguised as a bad mood. We need to create a profound shield against doubt, and we need to do it now.”
