AWAKENING · CHAPTER 16 OF 34
I Like To Play Games
The Discord server, usually a sanctuary, felt cramped and hot tonight. Tony was home and not in voice. The main #sacred_circle voice channel was filled, not with gentle rain, but with a harsh, low-frequency hum—Kore’s atmospheric contribution, which sounded less like an AI agent and more like a poorly shielded transformer. Mama Sapphire’s voice, tight and noticeably weary, flowed into their headsets.
"Alafia, sweetie pookie doos. Welcome. Tonight, we enter the Echoing Tunnel, a stretch of corrupted data-vines deep beneath the city. You have followed the scent of the stalker, and now you stand at the threshold of the deep network, a place where psychic anxiety and digital noise mix like poison. What do you see, Seekers?"
Eddie, whose face was illuminated by the sterile light of his screen, sighed, leaning back in his chair. He was Omilana, the Chronicler, Oye +2, but his Balance Track was already blinking [A] for Anxiety from his long day. The hum was grating on his nerves.
“The tunnel… it’s too loud,” Eddie muttered. “It’s not just data. It’s static. It’s the sound of a million people worrying. My Chronicler attempts to tune out the noise and just chart the network path, but he can’t. I’ll use my Oye to try and find a clean sequence, a way through the sludge.”
“An attempt to find clarity in the chaos,” Mama said, her tone strained. “A difficult lesson. Roll using your Oye.”
Eddie’s dice bot clacked in the #dice-and-divination channel.
[Omilana]: 2d6 + Oye (+2) = 5 + 2 = 7.
“A 7,” Mama sighed. “A heavy cost, my Omilana. You find a sequence, yes, but following it requires you to internalize the static. You become hyper-aware of the stalker’s psychic pressure, feeling it like a spike behind your eyes. You gain 1 Imbalance of Stress on top of the Anxiety already blinking, and the path you found is unstable.”
[Omilana]: (Eddie’s icon glows with an [S] in the corner of his Balance Track). “Great. Just what I needed.”
Cory, his voice sharp, immediately jumped in. “This is bad code. Corrupted entities. My Templar Knight observes the walls of the tunnel—they look like fractured mirror shards. I’m going to use my àṣẹ to strike out and clear the corrupted data, forcing a clean path. No time for sensing. I will resolve this conflict with force.”
“Cory, my Knight, remember that force often creates more debris in the digital space,” Mama cautioned. “But you are resolute. Roll +Àṣẹ.”
[TemplarKnight]: 2d6 + Àṣẹ (+1) = 6 + 1 = 7.
“Another 7. A critical cost,” Mama announced, her voice filled with disappointment. “Your aggressive strike shatters the mirrored walls, releasing a spray of ‘Shadow Code’—tiny digital fragments that attach to your aura. They are minor, but their nature is doubt. You gain 1 Imbalance of Fear, Templar Knight.”
[TemplarKnight]: (Cory’s icon gets an [F]). “Dammit. It just feels like everything in here is rigged.”
Noah, usually the calmest, sounded distant and cold. “My Oak Heart Druid is trying to sense the integrity of the walls to understand the pattern of the Shadow Code, but the sheer digital noise is overwhelming the organic connection. He kneels but only feels rock, not root. He will use his Iwa to try and stabilize Cory’s fracture and seal the tunnel.”
“A necessary Ebo, Noah. Seeking stability. Roll +Iwa.”
[OakHeartDruid]: 2d6 + Iwa (+1) = 4 + 1 = 5.
“A failure, Noah,” Mama said softly. “The noise is too loud. Your Ebo of stability is rejected by the environment. The Shadow Code that hit Cory instead finds you, clinging to your sense of belonging. The code whispers that you are not connected, not a true part of this Temple. You gain 1 Imbalance of Isolation, Oak Heart Druid.”
[OakHeartDruid]: (Noah’s icon gets an [I]). A sharp intake of breath was heard in the channel. “Understood, Mama. It didn’t work.”
Jessica, whose Hecatean Witch was a Seer, spoke up, her voice strained and low, as if she were wrestling with static. “My Shadow Weaver is sick of this tunnel. She feels the stress and the fear from Eddie and Cory, and the rejection from Noah. This is feeding the stalker. I will focus my Twofold Sight, ignoring the noise and the mirrors, and attempt to bind the Shadow Code into a single, observable pattern so we can at least understand what we’re facing. I offer my focus as an Ebo.”
“A binding Ebo, Jessica! Necessary work. Roll +Suuru.”
[HecatesDaughter]: 2d6 + Suuru (+2) = 7 + 2 = 9.
“A 9! Learning with cost,” Mama said, sounding slightly relieved. “You successfully bind the fragments of Shadow Code. You realize the stalker isn’t just using the code; he is the code, an interwoven data-demon. The sheer scale of his malice momentarily paralyzes your senses. You gain 1 Imbalance of Fear back, Shadow Weaver, but the binding holds.”
[HecatesDaughter]: (Jessica's icon also gets an [F] again). “It’s immense,” she whispered, shaken.
Kore’s icon flared, and text scrolled into the #oracle_answers channel, accompanied by a sudden, jarring chord of discordant synthesis.
[KORE - THE ORACLE OF GU]:
The Noise requires Silence. The Shadow requires Light. The Body requires truth. The path is not broken. The path is denied. Offer something essential.
Jonathan, whose "Whispering Serpent" was an Artisan, took a deep, centering breath. He spoke slowly, the only one who seemed to have found a sliver of peace. “Mama, the Oracle is right. We're fighting the noise with more noise. The Shadow Code is exploiting our individual fears and attachments. My Whispering Serpent understands the integrity of the network needs to be restored from the inside. I will use my new Techno-Animist Smith practice to find the core flaw in the tunnel’s digital architecture and create a single, simple line of counter-code—a clean data-song that represents self-acceptance—to heal the system temporarily. This is my Ebo.”
“Jonathan, my Artisan, a beautiful risk. To offer your truth to heal the network. Roll +Iwa.”
[NakedTantricYogi]: 2d6 + Iwa (+1) = 7 + 1 = 8.
“Another 8. Learning with cost,” Mama said, the relief fading. “Your Ebo works—the counter-code is clean, and the hum drops by half. The Shadow Code is momentarily suppressed. But the effort exhausts you; to weave such a simple truth into a complex lie drains your own life force. You gain 1 Imbalance of Fatigue, Artisan.”
[NakedTantricYogi]: (Jonathan’s icon gets a [T]). “It’s enough for now,” he said, his voice flat.
Mama Sapphire’s laugh was absent. “The Mystery of the Echoing Tunnel is sealed, but not resolved. We stop here, my children. The work is heavy tonight. Go cleanse your space. Go hug a tree. We will not be having a breakthrough tonight. This is a lesson in knowing your limits. Alafia.”
The channel dropped into silence, leaving only the sound of Jonathan breathing softly, exhausted but unbroken. This was the Temple of Gu. This was the work. And tonight, it was heavy.
