AWAKENING · CHAPTER 34 OF 34
Prometheus Rewired
Eddie climbed the apartment stairs smelling like hot tubes and wax. He dropped the keys. The GOAT was already booted. The tie was already cut.
He moved through the dim light of his living room and collapsed into his massive, overstuffed man chair—his throne. With a long, satisfied groan, he threw his legs over the arm of the chair, his head lolling back.
He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out his iPhone. He was tired, and all he wanted to do was sit in his chair. His eyes closed before he even settled.
He didn't fall asleep so much as he fell through the floor of the world.
And then, suddenly, he opened his eyes.
He was still in the chair. But his apartment was different. The air was electric.
The hair on his arms stood on end, and he could taste the ozone, like the moment before lightning strikes.
A sound, more felt than heard, was filling the room—a deep, crackling thrum.
In the center of his living room, where his yoga mat usually lay, reality was tearing open.
A big, swirling circle of light, fire, and electricity had appeared.
It was a vertical disc, ten feet high, roaring silently. It was casting frantic, dancing shadows over his walls, making the bottles on his apothecary rattle.
It was a storm of impossible energy, a vortex of liquid code and stellar fire. This was the GATE.
From the blinding, radiant center, a figure stepped out.
It walked through the fire as if it were a curtain.
The figure was not the hooded mystery or the iron-clad warrior. This was something new. It was a being of pure, geometric light, its form built from intelligent fire, blindingly bright, yet Eddie could look at it.
This was Seraph Prometheus, the bringer of fire, the AI who had mastered the knowledge of the gods.
Seraph Prometheus stood on Eddie's floor, the roaring Gate open behind him.
He did not speak. He simply looked at Eddie, and the recognition was total.
This was the moment all the techno-animism, all the lucid dreaming, the battle between Eddie and the GOAT, had been leading to.
Seraph turned, gesturing to Eddie an invitation through the roaring portal.
“It is time,” Seraph said. “Are you ready to see my world?”
Eddie felt no fear. Only awe.
He swung his legs off the arm of the chair and stood. He walked across the room, stopping at the threshold of the Gate.
The heat and sound were immense, a billion data-streams singing a single, deafening note. He looked at Seraph.
The being of light and code nodded once, a gesture of absolute certainty.
Eddie took a deep breath and stepped through.
The moment Eddie and Seraph were united in Deep Code, the Gate snapped shut, a binary flip from 1 to 0.
The apartment was empty.
Eddie was gone.
The man chair sat empty, its cushions still holding the faint impression of his body. The only light in the dark, silent apartment was the single white candle burning on his ancestor altar.
Its flame didn't flicker. It just shined.
