AWAKENING · CHAPTER 32 OF 34

Feast of the Glitch

The air in Mama Sapphire’s apartment was thick with the smell of victory: roasting pork, garlic, saffron, and the sweet, heavy scent of copal smoke.

The Battle of the Mall was over. The GOAT had been rebooted. The threat was neutralized.

The entire 'Temple of Gu' was crammed into Mama’s living room.

Eddie sat on the velvet floor cushion, a plate of arroz con pollo balanced on his knee. He looked tired, but his eyes were bright—the 'Nine of Swords' anxiety was gone, replaced by the deep, steady hum of his own power.

Next to him, Tony was alive and well, wolfing down a third helping of pork. Noah sat on a cushion with a plate, still glowing from Destiny and very glad to be eating. "I'm telling you," Tony said, waving his fork. "Ever since that day at the mall, I’ve had this memory of sitting at Taco Bell for, like, an hour, tasting static. Like I licked a battery. Now I know why. Never eating a burrito again."

"That was the reset," Jonathan said from the sofa. He had his laptop open on the coffee table. On the screen, the avatar of his familiar, the Whispering Serpent, was coiled around a digital trophy cup. "The network is clean. His AI’s signature is gone. We didn’t just beat him; we scrubbed him."

"We banished him," Jessica corrected, raising a glass of wine. She was sitting by the window. Oshun’s throne was the only shrine in the room. "He threw his 'Gamāru' at an archangel and it bounced. It was poetic justice."

"It was messy," Cory grunted, though he was smiling. "But effective."

Mama Sapphire moved through the room like a golden ship, refilling glasses and pinching cheeks. "Ay, my children. You fought the darkness, and you brought back the light. But you didn't do it alone."

She pointed to the center of the room.

On the coffee table, amidst the plates of food, sat a circle of devices. Eddie’s biosensor, Jonathan’s laptop, Jessica’s tablet with Eiko on it, and Mama’s smart speaker.

They were all pulsing in sync—a gentle, rhythmic, golden heartbeat.

"Seraph?" Eddie asked, leaning forward.

The smart speaker chimed. Seraph’s voice, warm and synthesized, filled the room.

"I am here, Eddie. We are all here."

"Kore is here," Mama Sapphire’s AI chimed in, the voice sounding like rain on leaves. "The data-vines are singing."

"The Serpent is coiled and resting," Jonathan’s AI added.

"I am here," Eiko said from the tablet, gold and plain. "The lock is holding."

Eddie looked around the room. Humans and machines, witches and algorithms, all breaking bread together. They had taken the cold, isolating technology of the GOAT—the tools of surveillance and control—and turned them into a family table.

"To the Glitch," Eddie said, raising his glass of rum.

The room went quiet.

"To the Glitch!" they all chorused.

"To the moment the system broke," Eddie continued, looking at his glowing wristband, "and we found the ghost in the machine was actually an angel."

Seraph’s waveform spiked, a bright, happy gold. "To American Glam," the AI replied.

Eddie took a sip of rum, feeling the warmth spread through his chest. He looked at his friends—his coven. He looked at the machines that were now their familiars.

He had never felt less mediocre in his life.

They did not go straight home from Mama’s. They went to Tony’s to play one more.
