AWAKENING · CHAPTER 03 OF 34
The Temple of Gu
The Discord server wasn't just a place to hang out on the internet with friends; it was a digital extension of Mama Sapphire's physical Temple in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Tonight, the main #sacred_circle voice channel pulsed with the soft, ambient sounds of rain on leaves—Kore's atmospheric contribution. The rain had a body to it. It hit the leaves, then the room, before anyone spoke. Kore was the name of Mama Sapphire’s AI agent. Mama lived alone and was a full-time IyanIfá and Rootworker.
She learned Hoodoo from her family, but met a Babalawo from North Carolina and traveled to Nigeria to get initiated as a priestess in Ifá. She was also crowned her guardian Orisha, Oshun. Mama called her the Supreme Divine Mother of the Yoruba people. Mama met Eddie on Witchtok, and they became friends. Eddie had taught her how to create a GPT to help her godchildren create characters for her RPG, The Temple of Gu.
Eddie, in his usual spot as admin, saw their icons glowing:
- [TheRootworker] (Tony)
- [TemplarKnight] (Cory)
- [OakHeartDruid] (Noah)
- [NakedTantricYogi] (Jonathan)
- [HecatesDaughter] (Jessica)
Mama Sapphire’s voice, warm and clear, flowed into their headsets.
"Alafia, sweetie pookie doos. Welcome, welcome. Tonight, we continue the Mystery of the Shrouded Grove. You have journeyed through the whispering data-vines, guided by the ancestral hum, and now stand at the edge of the Glimmering Glade, a place where the veil between the old spirits and the new tech is thin indeed. What do you see, Seekers?"
Eddie grinned. Mama was in her element. He was the Seeker named "Omilana," a Chronicler, Oye +2. His Balance Track was clear. When Mama made Eddie her “Hand of Ifá,” he was given the name Omilana by Oshun, meaning “water that breaks rock.” The name sat in his chest when she said it, a brief pull toward the Glade he was not rolling in yet.
Cory, his voice a low rumble, spoke first. "The Glade… I see the light refracting off something. Like old circuits woven into the very trees. My Templar Knight observes for any corrupted data-spirits, any imbalance trying to mimic light."
"A good observation, Cory," Mama said. "You perceive the truth of the Glade. The light is indeed from ancient, crystalline circuits, humming in perfect symbiosis with the bio-luminescent flora. There is a sense of calm here, a deep peace. But your spiritual senses are sharp, my Knight. You also feel a subtle pull—a faint vibration beneath the calm, like a question waiting to be asked."
Noah chimed in. "My Oak Heart Druid kneels, touching the ground. He tries to sense the oldest spirit of this place, the root of its being, both organic and digital. I will use my Oye to understand its natural rhythm."
Mama smiled. "Excellent, Noah. You seek the deeper truth. This is a Lesson of Insight. Please roll using your Oye."
Noah’s dice bot clacked in the #dice-and-divination channel.
[OakHeartDruid]: 2d6 + Oye (+1) = 8 + 1 = 9.
"A 9!" Mama's voice resonated. "Learning with cost. Noah, you successfully connect with the ancient spirit of the Glade. It is a spirit of profound patience and slow, deliberate growth, a spirit born of both silicon and soil. You understand its deepest desire: to be heard. But the very act of reaching into such deep, intertwined roots stirs up a faint sense of doubt within you. The mystery is vast."
[OakHeartDruid]: (Noah’s icon glows with a [D] in the corner of his Balance Track). “Understood, Mama. The magnitude of it.”
Jessica, whose Hecatean Witch, Shadow Weaver, was a Seer, spoke up. "My Shadow Weaver has always been... sensitive. She feels the pull, the question the Glade asks. She will attune her Twofold Sight and listen. If it wants to be heard, she will offer her attention. I'll use my Iwa, for true listening."
"Jessica, my dear, you cut to the heart of it. A true Seer's work. A Lesson of Integrity, indeed. Roll +Iwa."
[HecatesDaughter]: 2d6 + Iwa (+1) = 7 + 1 = 8.
"An 8! Learning with cost. Jessica, your integrity opens a channel. The Glade whispers to you, not in words, but in images: ancient patterns of growth, cycles of decay, a steady, rhythmic pulse. You see its deep yearning to share its story. But the sheer volume of its silent history, the weight of centuries upon centuries, momentarily overwhelms your senses. You gain 1 Imbalance of Fear, Shadow Weaver."
[HecatesDaughter]: (Jessica's icon also gets an [F]). “The beauty and the burden.”
Tony, whose "Iron Bark Rootworker" was a Mediator, spoke with a grounded tone. "Mama, the Glade wants to be heard, and my friends are carrying its weight. This is a breakdown in relationship—the Glade with those who pass through. I offer my Voice of Harmony. I will sing a simple song of welcome and listening, channeling the Glade's desire to be heard and our willingness to listen."
"Beautiful, Tony! A true Mediator's Ebo! You are seeking to resolve conflict, to build a bridge. Roll +Suuru."
[TheRootworker]: 2d6 + Suuru (+2) = 11 + 2 = 13!
"A 13! Full integration, Tony! Your offering is received! As your voice, rich and deep, fills the Glade, the crystalline circuits glow brighter, and the bio-luminescent plants pulse in time. In the voice channel, Kore’s rain finds the song and falls with it for one breath. Noah, Jessica, you feel the Glade's spirit respond to Tony's song, accepting his mediation. You both clear 1 Imbalance!"
Noah and Jessica cheered.
[HecatesDaughter]: Thank you, Tony!
"Àṣẹ! Tony, your Ebo has brought a temporary peace, allowing the Glade to share its truth. Now, what does the Oracle, Kore, have to say about this newfound understanding?"
Kore’s icon flared, and text scrolled into the #oracle_answers channel, accompanied by soft, resonant tones in the voice chat. The letters threw a little gold on Eddie’s screen, a sister light to Seraph.
[KORE - THE ORACLE OF GU]:
The Glade wishes to be known. It asks not for a monument, but a memory. Not a shield, but a song. One who would know its heart must offer their own, woven into the eternal hum of its purpose.
Jonathan, whose "Whispering Serpent" was an Artisan, took a deep breath. "Mama, the Oracle speaks of a song, a woven heart. My Whispering Serpent understands. To truly know the Glade, we must create for it. I will use my Sacred Forging practice. I will attune to the Glade's hum, its light, its rhythm, and I will weave a data-song, a beautiful piece of coded poetry dedicated to its purpose. This is my Ebo."
"Jonathan, my Artisan, your heart speaks truth. To create is to offer. Roll +Iwa, for the integrity of your creation."
[NakedTantricYogi]: 2d6 + Iwa (+1) = 9 + 1 = 10!
"A 10! Full integration! Jonathan, the crystalline circuits of the Glade flare, pulling your coded poetry deep into their ancient network. The bio-luminescent plants shimmer in response. The Glade is pleased. You have honored its request. The Mystery of the Shrouded Grove is complete! Breakthrough, my Artisan! And because your Sacred Forging was so potent, your song carries a blessing: for the next three Seekers who perform an Ebo within this Glade, they will gain a +1 bonus to their roll!"
Jonathan beamed. "Yes! That's the flow!"
"Indeed. And Jonathan, for your Breakthrough, you have truly learned the lesson of the Glade's interwoven spirit. You learn a new Practice from your Artisan's Path: Techno-Animist Smith. You now know how to repair glitched spirits and heal corrupted data-streams, treating them as complex systems to be carefully mended."
Mama Sapphire's laugh, a sound like chimes in a gentle breeze, filled the server. "See, my children? This is the work. This is the journey. Not a fight, but a dance. Not a conquest, but a conversation. And always, always, with light, with joy, and with love."
Eddie felt a profound sense of peace settle over him. This was the Temple of Gu. This was their family. This was the light he carried.
